Looking Beyond Mere Compliance Software Quality Center(SQC): Two Decades Of Facilitating Quality Improvement & Best Practices, That Translates To Better Business Performance, And Building Capability

Kris Puthucode, Director and CEO & Sahana Puthucode, Electronics Engineer, Co-founder and Director There is no debate that the year 2020 has been a challenging one for individuals and businesses alike. While the world has witnessed an unprecedented crisis on the pandemic, economic, and political front, many companies have also found this a “rejuvenation” of sorts to re-think their business models and even thrive. “This single aspect of adapting to change is what I describe as the major trend we have seen and continue to see,” says Kris Puthucode, the director and CEO at Software Quality Center (SQC).

Quality and process improvement efforts are intrinsically tied into every small or large business’s plan to adapt and respond to this kind of change. As most third-party quality certification audits, appraisals, and assessments have been operationalized remotely, the quality management professionals and industry leaders need to ensure effectiveness balanced with the scalability of any solution or service provided in this space. Although the essence of all quality and process improvement methods/paradigms has always been the same, there has never been a better time for companies to live up to these principles, as it is now directly linked to their survival in challenging times.

With a proven history of 20 years, across the world, with specific expertise in DoD, Government and Aerospace, along with select multinationals, medical devices & health care industry, Software Quality Center (SQC) has been at the forefront of helping such companies in their quest to maintain quality and process in these uncertain times. At its core, SQC provides strategic consulting, training, and independent certification/appraisal services in the use of leading best practices from a select set of models/standards. This includes predominantly the CMMI® set of models from the CMMI Institute, (SW Development, Services, and Supplier Managementdomains) BD-CMM from the Shipley-Business Winning Institute, (best practices for better business ‘Winning’), Cybersecurity and Data Management practices, and select ISO standards (ISO 20000 and ISO 27001 for Information Security).

Walking with the Clients in the Evolving Times

SQC has been leveraging remote working and delivering training and consulting services for its global clientele, long before the pandemic drove many businesses to go all-digital and consider platforms like Zoom to run their quality and process operations.

Since the first time GoToMeeting® was getting popular in TV ads a decade ago, SQC has invested in learning the nuances of online virtual training, and meetings, and webinars and have been conducting subject matter training as an informed choice.

Further, the company has also been certified for its trainers by the PMI® (Project Management Institute) for Live-Virtual delivery of several of its training classes for eight years. “We have been offering high-end subject matter IT and Software engineering related training using virtual methods for more than a decade, thereby rendering us one of the strongest to adapt to the situation that 2020 brought along,” mentions Kris.

He further states that SQC’s focus has always been to not merely push for a bare-bone, minimalistic compliance-oriented approach to quality or improvement efforts overall. “Today’s emphasis on Quality has evolved to one being a proactive approach to having Quality practices “built-in” to each step of product development or service delivery as opposed to getting involved at the end of product development to test it. This where SQC makes a difference,” says Sahana Puthucode, Co-founder and Director, SQC.

We are abreast of latest and greatest in best practices, being up to date to advise our clients on what is best for them. Their success is our only goal, and that is how our results are proven

With a “Walk with you” approach, SQC’s services leave clients stronger afterward. While its competition bothers about doing the “run of the mill” solutions, SQC has always focused on this approach of “Walk with you” through its engagements. The engagements have always focused on one thing – to do better when clients are successful in their products and services to their end-customers. “The heart of any engagement for us is to deliver tangible and quantitative quality performance improvement that can be demonstrated through the clients’ own metrics aligned directly with the undertaken improvement initiatives. We lead in the engagements with our customers with this focus on performance based approach right at the time we get started,” states Sahana.

Delivering Holistic and Proven Methodology

As SQC specializes primarily in the U.S. and International Defence, Government, Aerospace, and multinational outsourcing type companies, where typically quality is a major concern and change is hard, the company’s job as consultants and trainers is more challenging.

To this end, the company only employs staff with the proven expertise of at least 15 years or more to successfully create a positive impact in its engagements. “We are a small business but agile in every sense of the word. And that makes us abreast of latest and greatest in best practices, being up to date to advise our clients on what is best for them. Their success is our only goal, and that is how our results are proven,” says Kris. SQC uses “common sense” practical best practices to apply the theory from books, not just the preaching and talking “ivory tower” approach. The company’s methodology focuses on using management systems and best practices to facilitate a preventive attitude in engineers and organizations, rather than just one of the corrective actions or for compliance alone.
SQC’s engagement model has always been holistic. They start by understanding and diagnosing the client organizations’ strengths and weaknesses, vis-à-vis their business goals and performance objectives. Sahana mentions that the clients trust SQC due to its proven model and expertise and has been associated with them for many years in most cases. One such example is of one of its longest-standing client-partners, where SQC has been involved for more than 20 years to help facilitate the adoption of best practices from the CMM and CMMI models. This multinational business is into products – from health/ medical devices to industrial automation products to consumer electronics. When the work started, there were quality-related issues, defects, late deliveries of products and services, and cost overruns. They turned to models such as CMM (at that time) to adopt some industry best practices in their lifecycle and engineering areas. Fast forward 20 years, they are now consistently an award-winning organization, continuing to win multiple accolades for Quality & Productivity, and are one of the fastest-growing in their industry, ranked among the top leaders. The tangible benefits that have been achieved are plenty, with almost zero scheduled delays, most product defects being detected in their development with no customer-related spills, and a perfect score for customer satisfaction from their end customers.

Being Future Ready is the Name of the Game

Such has been the prowess that SQC has created for itself by comprehending and fulfilling their clients’ needs. With 2020 bringing in a sea of changes, the company has been relentlessly delivering its quality and process expertise to help clients in the changing times. One such novel trend has been the proliferation of cyber threats as more of the workforce started working remotely from eCommerce retailers to mom-&-pop shops to service providers. In this regard, the company has been relatively proactive. “We have been among the initial set of professionals to get trained in the new Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC)® assessment method, which is a US Defense initiative, to develop and demand the use of a set of best practices in the entire Defense supply chain (DSC),” says Sahana. Further, SQC is working to being a certified provider to perform independent certification against the model, as a CMMC Certified Third-party accrediting organization (known as C3PAOs). We also want to improvise on our BD-CMM capabilities as the Shipley-Business Winning Institute makes plans to develop the next version of the BD-CMM model, the only of its kind for best practices in the business development domain.

SQC will continue to build on and evolve its finesse around using virtual methods and routine mode of working while looking to introducing capabilities in new services such as the improved BD-CMM, and possibly the CMMC as we advance into 2021 and beyond. With the changing geopolitical landscape, the power of AI, Blockchain, and IOT already has impacted many industries, and the fact that the global economy is increasingly becoming service-oriented (over 80 percent of the world’s economy today is Services), Puthucode mentions that SQC could not be more excited to step into the next decade. “We are leveraging better ways of working given what 2020 has thrown in the mix, while adding new capabilities like cyber, more PMI certified training courses, in a slow but steady approach, to expand our services, and as a strategy. An expansion to set up an office/operation in the UK is something we have been thinking of to make happen in the next 2-3 years,” concludes Kris.
